I’m getting a clicking from the driver’s side when turning right in our Sienna. I haven’t investigated yet, but I assume this is probably our CV joint going bad. How messy is DIY on that job? I watched a video and it doesn’t look worse than e.g. a brake pad & rotor job.

You’ll need a big ass hammer (much better than using a pickle fork on the ball joint) and a bit of grease. I guarantee the CV axle won’t go in as easy as it looks.
I wouldn’t say it’s as easy as a brake job, but it’s not much harder.

It is a pain in the ass, but not complicated. The toughest part on most cars is getting the spindle off the ball joint w/o damaging the ball joint boot in the process.
you can rent the axle nut at most auto parts stores, loosen the axle nut first, before you even jack up the car, that way to have the entire weight of the car keeping the wheel from trying to rotate as you loosen the nut.

Is your trans/diff going to dump all of its fluid out when you pop an axle out? That will be the only messy part. It is tougher than a brake job, the axle nut is usually pretty tight and you often have to unbolt large components of the steering or suspension which are a bit harder to work with than something like a brake caliper. Also gear oil smells worse than anything else in or around your car.
That being said, this is still something an amateur can do in their driveway. The difference is it’ll take you several hours the first time when it should only take an experienced mechanic ten or fifteen minutes. I’ve done maybe eight or ten and it takes me 30 minutes on a FWD layout.

Depends how rusted everything is. Usually takes me a couple hours if I have to fight stuck bolts. Make sure you have a huge pan for when you pull the axle out of the gearbox because itll drop gearbox oil everywhere.

On a technical level it is not much more difficult than a brake job but the actual physical labor will be much more.

If you’re in an area prone to rust, this will help quite a bit:

If not, just use a BFH to tap it out.

Make sure that you crack loose the axle nut with the car on the ground. If you don’t have an impact wrench then you’ll need a breaker bar for sure. I would recommend having someone hold the brakes while you’re doing it instead of just having it in park so you’re not pushing against your parking pawl.
